Pop Sour

Dear Cocktail lovers,
So glad to see you again.  In order to bring to you the next amazing cocktail,
I teamed up with the Drink Wiz ,Pamela Wiznitzer, who also shares the passion for libations,

Using Popcorn, dark rum, angostura bitters and chardonnay we created the “pop sour” ; a negative  twist on a new York sour where we used a float of white wine over a dark cocktail.  Popcorn being not very dominant in flavor, we used Popcorn syrup and also infused our rum with popcorn.
To make a “pop sour”  you will need:

  • Popcorn ( or Kettle corn- slightly salty and sweet at the same time- the simplest way is to buy it )
  • Dark Rum (we used Gosling’s)
  • White sugar
  • Fresh lemon juice 
  • Angostura bitters
  • Chardonnay ( preferably oaked) 
  • Cinnamon sticks

To make a popcorn infused rum:
Put the popcorn in a container , crush it with a muddler or the back of a spoon and add more popcorn, continue doing so until the container is full ( you can even use a glass- depend on the amount of “pop sours you will make) let sit and as popcorn dissolves add more popcorn, until the popcorn level meets with the rum level,
Let sit covered over night and strain through a coffee filter using the back of a spoon to pressure the rum out of the popcorn, If you don’t have a coffee filter just fine strain it using the same process.

For the popcorn syrup:
We are going to use the same method we used to create the infused rum but with boiling water, after you strained it and got left only the popcorn water, in a small saucepan add to it equal amount of white sugar and simmer until dissolve, let cool and bottle.

Sound like a bit of a trouble, but it’s very simple,
Now when you’re ready to enjoy yourself,
Combine in a shaker:

  • 1.5 oz. popcorn dark rum
  • 1.5 oz lemon juice
  • 1 oz. popcorn syrup
  • 4-5 dashes of Angostura bitters

Add ice and shake until cold, double strain to a glass of your choice.
Carefully using a barspoon and a pourer, float 1 oz. of chardonnay on top.
Grate a little bit of cinnamon over the chardonnay.
This simple and delicious combination of flavors will leave you with a taste for more.
We recommend to stir the drink before drinking,
